So, *somewhat* spontaneously, I decided to go to a Shpongle show last night at the Wonder Ballroom in Portland. I didn’t know much about them other than what little I had listened to, pre-show, on YouTube and on their MySpace page.
Much to my surprise, these guys put on a RAD show! While we didn’t get to see an actual live live show, the DJ that was spinning the beats and the contortionists who were performing on stage were… well, pretty much indescribable. It’s one of those things that even looking back at the multitude of pictures I took at the show, I don’t feel that they even captured the true essence of the experience in its entirety.
And, footnote: the Wonder Ballroom has officially catapulted itself as one of my all time favorite music venues in the country. I’d say it ranks right up there in coolness factor along the likes of The Bowery Ballroom in New York, and The Fillmore and The Great American in SF. Tons of cool people, loads of open space to dance, reasonably priced drinks, and a security staff that is uber-liberal! ;)
Shpongle was most definitely a surprise experience — and one that is sure to be forever locked in my internal music memory database. In fact, it goes to show that you never really know what you’re gonna get when you embark on a spontaneous decision or an adventure…
